Stephenson: The Hands-on Guide to Surgical Training

This book will provide a practical hands-on guide for surgical trainees, and also those aspiring to a career in surgery. It will begin with practical advice for medical students and Foundation doctors trying to get into surgery as a career and will then principally cover all aspects of surgical training. There will be clinical sections covering a range of subjects from: what to do if you see a patient in A & E with a ruptured aneurysm, what to look for in a surgical wound to see if it’s healing, how to do an appendicectomy to how to dictate a clinic letter.

There will also be non-clinical sections covering career progression, the clandestine workings of the behind-the-scenes surgical world and getting the most out of your training. There will be a comprehensive section on recruitment into surgery with advice on interviews and enhancing your career prospects. It will aim to cater not only for a range of seniorities of trainee but also to some extent, the different subspecialties.

The book will be accompanied by a wide-range of illustrations, flowcharts and photographs to aid understanding.
