Hand Surgery is a significant achievement for its four authors. It is a daunting task to cover all hand surgery topics in a single book. This publication includes definitions, diagnoses, mechanisms of injury, pathology, principles, indications, treatments, outcomes, and complications. By necessity it is written in point form and with few illustrations. The intent is not to explain or discuss extensively. However, the degree of detail is admirable and is a consequence of a thoughtful and precise format and pithy writing.
The sections on assessment, anaesthesia and rehabilitation are invaluable. They highlight the symbiosis between patient, therapist, surgeon, and anaesthetist, and also complement the chapters concentrating on surgical conditions.
In reading this book, one is reminded of the extensive and varied nature of hand surgery: it involves the management of the skin and its contents, and demands orthopaedic, plastic, vascular and neurosurgical expertise, as well as an understanding of the principles and practice of hand therapy, splinting and rehabilitation. The content of current orthopaedic and plastic surgery training programmes is less than adequate for the purpose of training a hand surgeon.
It is a privilege to teach. It is gratifying to see those one has taught teaching others. This book will be a rewarding companion for all involved in the management of hand injury and disease, be they therapist or surgeon, trainee or consultant.
