The second edition of Complications in Head and Neck Surgery presents a comprehensive and contemporary discussion of complications of head and neck surgical procedures. Topics are organized by anatomic region and are grouped with related procedures. Each topic is explored in depth by chapter authors from varied medical disciplines, each chosen for his or her expertise and experience. Although major surgical procedures and associated topics are emphasized, new surgical techniques and less commonly seen procedures are also covered. Some complications are discussed in more than one chapter to present different perspectives.
New chapters address important contemporary issues, including patient safety and medical errors. The avoidance, recognition, and management of complications are central to successful head and neck surgical care. Proper and prompt management prevents the complication “cascade” whereby a problem is amplified or other complications ensue. A discussion of potential risks and complications of a surgical procedure with the patient is an essential component of informed consent and risk management. It is hoped that this book will foster and facilitate increased communication between the head and neck surgeon and the patient, resulting in increased patient understanding and improved patient care, and between health care professionals, contributing to a cooperative multidisciplinary approach to care of the head and neck surgical patient.
