Kambin: Arthroscopic and Endoscopic Spinal Surgery : Text and Atlas 2nd edition

The term “minimally invasive spinal surgery” was coined in early 1990 following publication of the first edition of this text entitled Arthroscopic Microdiscectomy: Minimal Intervention in Spinal Surgery, and subsequent establishment of the International Society for Minimal Intervention in Spinal Surgery (ISMISS) under the auspices of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) in April l990.
The orthopedic and neurological surgeons who participated in lectures and hands-on workshops both in Philadelphia and abroad have witnessed the evolution of minimally invasive spinal surgery from blind nucleotomy to endoscopic fragmentectomy, decompression of lateral recess stenosis, foraminoplasty, and spinal stabilization.
In Arthroscopic and Endoscopic Spinal Surgery: Text and Atlas, Second Edition, experts describe and illustrate various techniques and approaches that are currently used in this field. In addition, the ongoing research for the betterment of spine care via minimally invasive approaches is briefly reviewed.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to so many of my colleagues who supported my efforts in the field of minimally invasive spinal surgery throughout the years. Many of them participated in our teaching symposiums and have provided valuable contributions to this text.
Parviz Kambin

From Back Cover

Minimally invasive spinal surgery has progressed significantly from the first blind nucleotomy in the 1970s to such advanced techniques as endoscopic fragmenectomy, decompression of lateral recess stenosis, foraminoplasty, and spinal stabilization. In Arthroscopic and Endoscopic Spinal Surgery: Text and Atlas, an authoritative panel of surgeons, researchers, inventors, experts, and the creator of the field describe and illustrate various techniques and approaches that are currently used for the treatment of painful spine pathologies. The authors guide the surgeon and demonstrate step-by-step how minimally invasive techniques can be used for the treatment of spinal disorders without violating the content of the spinal canal and how anatomical structures appear through an endoscope. They also provide visual aid for the diagnosis and recognition of various anatomical structures of the spine and cutting-edge methods that prevent the development of postsurgical failed-back syndrome.
An accompanying DVD shows actual surgical procedures performed during arthroscopic and endoscopic microdiscectomy and arthroscopic interbody fusion using percutaneous pedicular fixators. It also includes original colored photos captured during surgeries.
Up-to-date and instructive, Arthroscopic and Endoscopic Spinal Surgery: Text and Atlas will teach surgeons how minimally invasive techniques can be used for the treatment of spinal disorders without violating the content of the spinal canal and normal anatomy.

Epilepsy Surgery: Principles & Controversies (Neurological Disease & Therapy)

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders. Nearly all patients with recurrent seizures receive medical management, and many respond well, but seizures in more than one-quarter of patients are not adequately controlled, and patients suffer long-term morbidity, disability, and underemployment as a consequence. Neurosurgical intervention is the best treatment for many of these medically intractable patients.
Over the past 50 years, neurosurgical treatment of epilepsy has become progressively more sophisticated, and more widely available, so that there are now hundreds of specialized epilepsy surgery centers around the world, as well as a broad consensus on the fundamentals of selecting surgical candidates, performing the presurgical evaluation, and techniques of the surgical resection. Although several very excellent and comprehensive books on epilepsy surgery exist, this book takes a different approach. In addition to presenting the current state of the art, we highlight the evolving and unresolved questions in epilepsy surgery, and in this way bring out the limitations of current techniques and future directions the field must take.

Decision Making in Spinal Care

Each chapter opens with a concise introduction to the topic and discussion of the classification of the injury, condition, or management approach. The authors then describe the diagnostic workup of the patient, the treatment options available, the likely outcome, and possible complications.
This "must-have" reference is ideal for orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, and primary care physicians seeking to sharpen their clinical decision-making skills in managing spine conditions. The book will also benefit spine fellows, medical students, and residents needing a comprehensive board review.
